Build your own Pop-Tarts, with or without the store
This week, Times Square Store played host to the new opening of the Pop Tart store. The brand store offers anything from Pop-Tarts cuisine to build-your-own Pop-Tarts. At $ 1,000 per square foot, Times Square rent is a massive investment for the business, which has not yet decided whether the Pop-Tart store is going to be a permanent fixture.
What the Pop-Tarts store features
Pop-Tarts World offers a little bit of everything. The cafe at Pop-Tarts World serves up Pop-Tarts sandwiches, Pop-Tarts-covered celery, even Pop-Tarts topped cinnamon rolls. A vending machine stocked with 23 Pop-Tarts flavors allows customers to create their own pack of Pop-Tarts, at $ 1 per pastry. Finally, the build-your-own Pop-Tarts bar lets you create just about any Pop-Tarts topping and flavor that you can think of.
Brand visibility is the goal of the Pop-Tarts store
Kellogg’s decided to open the Pop-Tarts shop in Times Square because they feel it is a “mature brand”. The toaster treat is halfway between a breakfast bar and a pastry, and sales lately have been relatively flat. Pop-Tarts sold $ 481 million worth of the pastries in 2009.
Baking your own Pop-Tarts
Customized Pop-Tarts are available outside of Times Square. Pop-Tarts at home are less costly and healthier than the repurchased ones. You can avoid the high fructose corn syrup and make your own for about 20 cents per Pop-Tart. In a bowl, combine 2 cups of flour with 1 tablespoon sugar, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 cup butter, 1 large egg, and a couple of tablespoons of milk. Roll out the dough and cut rectangles. Spread just about any filling you would like on half of the rectangles. Use the un-spread half of the rectangles to top the filling, then seal it by pressing the edges with a fork. Put the dough within the fridge while you preheat the oven to 350, then bake them for 20 to 25 minutes.
