Nap Nanny products recalled by CPSC

The Consumer Product Safety Commission has recalled Nap Nanny products, with the support of manufacturer Baby Matters. One five-month-old died while using a Nap Nanny, though it was getting used incorrectly. For those who have a first generation Nap Nanny, the company is offering $ 80 off the purchase of a new product.

The Nap Nanny product

The Baby Matters company makes and distributes the Nap Nanny, a product they say helps fussy babies sleep more easily. The Nap Nanny has a three-point harness and molded foam. The harness is what is at issue in this recall — when used incorrectly, the harness doesn’t hold the baby in place. D-rings do not hold the Velcro harness in place in first generation products. Only those without the D-ring are incorporated within the recall.

What to do if you have the Nap Nanny

Which product you’ve requires your response to the Nap Nanny recall. The first-generation Nap Nanny products were sold between January 2009 and July 2010. Call Baby Matters at 888-240-4282 to get a coupon for 61 percent off the purchase price of a new Nap Nanny. If your Nap Nanny has D-rings, you need to look at the video on the Baby Matters website before using it again.

Questions about the effectiveness of the CPSC

A long line of baby product recalls this year consists of this Nap Nanny. The CPSC has recalled a huge variety of products in the last year, including pacifiers and drop-side cribs. In 2008, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act, which asked for standards to be set for baby gear. Thus far, baby walkers and bath seats have been subjected to standards. You will find forthcoming standards for cribs, and you will find plans for other products. The CPSC has a serious problem: not much staff, but the responsibility for every product on the market.
