Critics Not Entirely Blown Away By MacGruber

A feature film of MacGruber had been rumored for some time. The Saturday Night Live parody of MacGyver was a hit with fans, and it made for some great commercials, but it is not much of a hit with critics. It can be competing at the box office with the fourth and final installment of the Shrek franchise, Shrek Forever After. The reviews for both are lukewarm.

MacGruber on the big screen

After all the television shorts and Super Bowl spots, MacGruber is now a feature film. It will compete for box office payday advances with a film starring an SNL alumnus, that being Mike Meyers. The MacGruber character parodies action heroes from the 1980s, complete with mullet. Granted, the target audience may be too young to remember MacGyver, or John Carpenter's masterpiece They Live. Rotten Tomatoes gives MacGruber a score above 50 percent, but Kurt Loder of MTV is non-plussed.

Shrek Forever After will do, donkey

There could be no Shrek sequels forever after Shrek Forever After. It is another sequel, and Rotten Tomatoes gives it just over a 50 percent rating also. Sequels tend to run out of steam eventually, and some film franchises run out of steam instantly because they just stink (Transformers comes to mind.) It does have 3D going for it though. It may be at least interesting visually.

Scene-apsis

We’ve all seen the MacGruber trailers and TV spots, so we know what we’re getting. It won’t be a thinking persons’ film, but it should be amusing. It seems SNL movies just aren't what they used to be, but considering that they've had various flops to every success, a quality SNL film is a rare bird. The new Shrek film, like many other movies these days, is relying on 3D to sell it. Something can look great, but if it's a lousy movie, it is nevertheless a lousy movie. However, many people sure are convinced that it does.
